I think you are dead on with this. I left this up to subordinates and it has floundered. I recently took over the process of posting, literally earlier this week, and have not had quick success but realize that many of our clients are younger and have through out their business careers “grown up” with social media. My company is late to the game but I believe it is better late than never.

Relating your early experiences makes your conclusions all the more credible.

It seems you and I entered the social media fray about the same time. And I’ve come to similar conclusions. Two problems, of course are: (1) All five of your benefits can appear “soft” relative to hitting numbers this quarter and (2) truly understanding these five–as well as the fact that they can be as important as hitting numbers this quarter–take time…which takes commitment. You say your commitment was driven by competitiveness. For me, it was that plus thirst to dissect the real value of a new medium. But in any case, executives need something to drive them through the trough of frustration and unclear value.

Perhaps posts like yours can be part of building that drive in more execs.

Cheers, Ken

You’ve hit on all the important points.

I’m glad you stuck it out and realized that gaining traction with Twitter takes time. When I first started (2 years ago, I think), I felt exactly the same way. It took about 6 months for much of anything to kick in.

Along with brand-building, one of the big benefits Twitter brought me was in driving traffic to my blogs, to market my business. I was blogging for about a year before diving into Twitter. I knew Twitter was a valuable marketing tool, but was resistant to committing time to yet another social media platform.

As far as ROI, I can tell you that once I started tweeting my blog posts, I saw a marked jump in visitors and subscribers to my blogs. Twitter and blogging really go together perfectly.

Another huge benefit, as you say, is networking (or building community). I’ve rubbed elbows through Twitter with many wonderful people I never would have known about otherwise. I’ve found most people on Twitter to be generous and supportive.

In my practice, I urge my c-suite clients to get on board with Twitter. Few are willing to make the commitment. You should be commended for sticking it out, knowing there must be something to it.

A recent blog post of mine may be of interest, Twitter for C-Suite Executive Job Search — http://executivecareerbrand.com/twitter-for-c-suite-executive-job-search/

I hope you’re enjoying Twitter as much as I am!
