Your example of expressing empathy and creativity is key to customer satisfaction. If we show our customers that we care about their preferences and input, it makes it easier to find a solution that all parties can be happy with. “I can’t” shuts down any other possibilities, and it makes customers want to call it quits with you. I called it quits with a vendor when I heard “we can’t” and then “OK, we can, but it will cost you a lot more,” when I knew that what I was asking for would only take them a few minutes. Go the extra mile for your customer and they will be more likely to stick with you for the long run. Thanks for such a great post, Kathy

It also happens to be my favorite one and the one I feel strongest about. I had a similar quote in mine regarding “what do you do when nobody is watching”. I’ve enjoyed the Leadership minute series, Daniel.

My post on Integrity is at http://ow.ly/6ecBq .

This happens often in business, however, I believe that most customers are intelligent enough to appreciate when you take the high road. Experience has shown me time and time again that when competitors start trashing you, it sends alarm bells ringing to your customers.

Going on the defensive only acknowledges that there may be a grain of truth somewhere in the allegations.

The biggest underlying issue can be complacency. One should never take for their customers for granted. Treat them as your best customer every day, all the time. That way, when gorilla tactics come into play, your customers will immediately see it for what it is, shoddy fear mongering because they see you as a threat. Which, firmly establishes you on the high road.

Comment on You’re the CEO…So You Work For Me! by KarlLHughes http://www.newmanon.com/2011/07/youre-the-ceo-that-is-why-you-work-for-me/#comment-595 Wed, 24 Aug 2011 04:09:53 +0000 http://www.newmanon.com/?p=303#comment-595 Tvery true. I think it’s also important to point out that CEO has slightly different meaning depending on the size and age of the company. Young, small companies need passionate advocates to attract the attention of the big guys, whil big companies need well-connected business leaders to keep them moving.

Comment on Why Fail Gracefully? by profkrg http://www.newmanon.com/2011/06/why-fail-gracefully/#comment-592 Sat, 20 Aug 2011 17:21:55 +0000 http://www.newmanon.com/?p=240#comment-592 Daniel,

You should read the book Self-Insight by Dunning (http://www.amazon.com/Self-Insight-Roadblocks-Detours-Knowing-Psychology/dp/1841690740/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1313860779&sr=1-1) It’s about this self awareness concept, which is actually super difficult to do. It’s so easy to view others, but much more difficult to truly understand ourselves. I have come to think of self-insight as a constant process. It’s really part of learning. I learn something (positive or negative) about myself every day. Then, the next step is to try to fix things about yourself with which you do not agree… that’s another mess all together.

Great post! Thanks for writing it. It really made me think/reflect.

Can’t even put into words how reading this makes me feel abt the company I work for. I still do a great job because that’s how I am, but I see the people around me & those not quite far up the food chain, but higher than me, and I just shake my head.
